Ocarina of Time Heart Pieces

Heart Pieces are acquired through various regions of Hyrule, and are used to increase your heart meter. When you collect 4 pieces, you raise your meter to one more Heart Container permanently. In Ocarina of Time, there are 36 heart pieces in all.

Contents

[edit] Death Mountain Crater #1

Special Items Required: None, but Goron tunic can be beneficial.

Status Required: Child or Adult Link

To get this one, you have to access the crater by climbing to the top, then going through the entrance as a Child. As an Adult, you can use the shortcut with the Hookshot.

At the top of the area, the Heart Piece should be down a wall with a hidden niche holding the Piece of Heart. From where you enter as a child, walk directly towards the end and drop down. You should find that the wall can be clung to, and you can descend to the niche. Keep an eye on the timer though, and keep your health full, as it determines the amount you can spend in the area.

If you got there as an adult with the Goron tunic, the task should be pretty simple as a time limit wouldn't be applied.

[edit] Death Mountain Crater #2

Special Items Required: Magic Bean Leaf, Bolero of Fire

Status Required: Adult Link with Magic Bean Leaf implanted as a Child.

In the Death Mountain Crater, there's a patch of soil that's only accessible by playing the Bolero of Fire, which will serve as a shortcut to the location, and deliver you near the patch of soil. Purchase the Magic Bean Leaf as a child, implant it, and return as an adult. Once you climb atop of the fully grown plant, it should ascend eventually to the top of a smoking ash cone with a Piece of Heart visible on top. Wait for the correct moment, then jump atop to reach and get it.

[edit] Death Mountain Trail

Special Items Required: Magic Bean Leaf implanted

Status Required: Adult Link after Magic Bean Leaf planted in soft soil.

If you look up at the top of the entrance to Dodongo's Cavern, you should spot a Heart Piece. To do this, purchase a Magic Bean Leaf as a Child and implant it under the entrance in the soil patch, (behind where the boulder was, unless it had been removed.)

When you return as an adult, the plant will have grown, and you can go atop it to ascend to the top of the entrance. Jump off to get a Piece of Heart.

[edit] Desert Colossus

Items Required: Magic Bean Leaf ingrained in the patch of soil as a Child, Requiem of Spirit

Status Required: Adult

As a child, purchase a Magic Bean Leaf and play the Requiem of Spirit. Near the giant statue, there should be a patch of soil nearby to where you may plant the seed. Come back as an adult and perch atop it, and it should ascend to the ark after going through the area. Atop the ark is a Piece of Heart. Wait for the final moment of the Magic Bean Leaf's course, and then jump atop it to acquire it.

[edit] Gerudo Valley #1

Special Items Required: None

Status Required: Child or Adult Link

Drop down either a child or adult via the chicken as a child or simply diving. Try to land on the top part of the valley in the water. (a.k.a. the closest to the waterfall you can get.) Afterwards, climb atop the ledge, and go behind the waterfall, which there should be a ladder. Behind the waterfall, there shouldn't be a current, which will allow you to swim to the ladder. Climb atop it to go to a niche containing a Piece of Heart. Simply acquire.

[edit] Gerudo Valley #2

Special Items Required: If child, the chicken. (physically) If adult, the Longshot.

Status Required: Child or Adult Link

In the valley, there should be two ledges. On a ledge, there's a crate that contains a Piece of Heart. As a child, descend upon it grabbing the Cuckoo and floating down to the ledge with the crate. Roll into it to make it appear. As an adult, simply aim the Longshot at the crate. Once there, roll into it as an adult, and it should appear to you the same. Simply grab it.

[edit] Gerudo's Fortress #1

Special Items Required: Epona

Status Required: Adult Link

At the highest part of the Gerudo Fortress outside the building, talk to the woman by the horse in the daytime. Call your horse with Epona's Song, talk to her from horseback, and she'll ask you to play a game for 50 Rubees. If you score a certain number of points, you'll win the Piece of Heart.

This test is pretty much unrelated to anything you've done so far. You have to shoot accurately while you're moving, in which the only related instance would be the Big Poes in Hyrule Field. Try to hit the jars as a priority, as you can hit them in somewhat of a pattern. Also practice hitting in the center multiple times, and try to use all your ammo.

Even though you may not get it on the first try, keep practicing, and it'll be yours.

[edit] Gerudo's Fortress #2

Special Items Required: Hookshot (Scarecrow's Song may be required.)

Status Required: Adult Link

It's preferred to get this Piece of Heart when you get the Gerudo Membership Card, but climb to the top of the fortress via vines once you're on the certain platforms. From the top, you should see a large treasure chest. That chest contains a Piece of Heart.

If you're unable to use your hookshot to reach the treasure chest, make sure you have the Scarecrow's Song as he can appear at a closer range. Hookshot onto him or simply use the Longshot to avoid this altogether. Once this is accomplished, open the chest and acquire the Piece of Heart.

[edit] Goron City

Special Items Required: Either Goron's Bracelet or the Bomb Bag to make it easier.

Status Required: Child Link

If you prefer to get the Piece of Heart with just the Goron's Bracelet, then you'll need to depend on the Bomb Plants. On the second floor, there should be a Bomb Plant in the passage connecting the first floor to the second floor. (This includes the ground floor, which means the first floor substitutes as the ground floor.)

Either way, light up all the torches on the ground floor by fire from upstairs. Lighting two permanent torches near the passageway to Kokiri Forest may be efficient. Once lighted, the jar in the middle will move. Throw either a Bomb Plant or a bomb into the jar, and it'll stop on a certain face. Depending on the face, it'll give out either some gems, nothing at all, or some valuable rupees and a Piece of Heart. Keep trying until you've acquired it.

[edit] Graveyard #1

Special Items Required: Sun's Song

Status Required: None

In the grave with the single Redead with no treasure chest at all, play the Sun's Song in the area. Once you do that, a treasure chest should appear near the ReDead. Open it to get the Piece of Heart.

Note: If you're confused about the location of this unmarked grave, check for butterflies or flowers in the Graveyard at the daytime, and mark them in the future.

[edit] Graveyard #2

Special Items Required: None (Rupess would help)

Status Required: Child Link

During the proper time at night, in the Heartpounding Gravedigging Tour, Dampe will walk around the area. Pay him 10 rupees to dig up the ground, which may possibly unearth a Piece of Heart.

(Items will only appear near the dirt patches, and you'll only get an item from there once he's directly atop of it. Talk to him at the right time to get items, and eventually the Piece of Heart should be yours.)

[edit] Graveyard #3

Special Items Required: Magic Bean Leaf

Status Required: Adult Link, Magic Bean Leaf implanted into patch as a child.

At one of the corners of the Graveyard, you should find a patch. If you were able to purchase a Magic Bean Leaf, implant it on there, and change into Adult Link. Once that status is acquired, there should be a plant in it's place. Mount it to ascend to a ledge with a crate. Jump to that crate and roll into the box to reveal a Piece of Heart. Simply pick it up after that.

[edit] Graveyard #4

Special Items Required: Longshot

Status Required: Adult Link

Enter Dampe's grave and he'll challenge you to a race as always. To get the Piece of Heart from him, you'll need to beat him in a minute or less. The only way to achieve this is at the last part, hookshot towards the torches to skip the lengthy ledge to cut valuable time. To reach that far at the beginning, the Longshot is required.

Once you have accomplished that, he'll leave behind the Piece of Heart.

[edit] Hyrule Field #1

Special Items Required: Stone of Agony (not required, but helpful), Bombs

Status Required: Child or Adult Link

Description: Near the entrance to Lake Hylia, enter into the square of grass surrounded by four fences. If you have the Stone of Agony, you should find the general location. If not, you'll have to place bombs until a hole appears. Enter it, and you'll find a Business Scrub. Defeat him, and he'll offer a Piece of Heart for 10 Rubees. Buy it to acquire the Piece of Heart.

[edit] Hyrule Field #2

Special Items Required: Bombs, Stone of Agony (helpful), Gold Scale or Iron Boots.

Status Required: Adult Link

From the passage from Gerudo Valley to Lake Hylia, there should be a tree very near the entrance to Gerudo Valley. Plant a bomb near there, and a hole should appear. Once you enter the cave, there should be a Piece of Heart at the bottom of a deep body of water. Either use the Iron Boots or use the Gold Scale to dive to acquire the Piece of Heart.

[edit] Hyrule Market #1

Special Items Required: None

Status Required: Child Link

In the market area, go to where the woman is snoozing at the counter. When you speak with her, she'll offer you to play the Bombchu game to win a prize which she'll display before you start, in which you may have to wait till she offers the Piece of Heart, but only displays the prize after you pay. To win, simply place the Bombchu in the right position so it can hit the center while avoiding all the obstacles. The first trials of the game may require experimentation. If you manage to bring down all three walls, the prize that the woman displayed earlier will appear. Even if it isn't the Piece of Heart, continue playing, and it'll be offered to you.

[edit] Hyrule Market #2

Special Items Required: None

Status Required: Child Link, night only

Go into one of the rooms in the alley, and you should find a woman looking for a lost dog. The dog is white and located in the market area, so get close to a dog for him to follow you. Once you've got his attention, bring him back to the woman, talk to her, and if the dog is the correct one, she'll give you a Piece of Heart.

[edit] Hyrule Market #3

Special Items Required: None, but Lens of Truth can be extremely beneficial.

Status Required: Child Link, night only

In the market area, near the alley, there should be a room where you can play a treasure chest game. Pay 10 Rubees to go into the next room in which you have to guess the chest that contains the key correctly 5 times and avoid the trunk with the gem to get the prize at the end of the room (which will be the Piece of Heart.) Keep in mind you can go out try it again.

The item that can be extremely beneficial is the Lens of Truth, which will let you see what is in each chest before you open them. This is highly recommended before playing this game.

[edit] Ice Cavern

Special Items Required: Bottle of Blue Fire

Status Required: Adult Link

In the second large room with the scythes, go to the right in the first room, and you should enter a room with red ice surrounding objects, and a torch emanating Blue Fire. You can use this to bottle up the energy to your convienience, as a Piece of Heart is sealed inside a block of red ice. Use the blue fire to melt the red ice concealing the Piece of Heart, then acquire it to your collection.

[edit] Kakariko Village #1

Special Items Required: 50 Skulltula Tokens

Status Required: Child or Adult Link

Go to the right side of the village when you enter it to see an acursed family. Get 50 Skulltula Tokens to release a curse on one family member inside the house, and talk to him to get a Piece of Heart. Most straightforward item ever.

[edit] Kakariko Village #2

Items Required: None, but Hookshot may help.

Status Required: Child or Adult

There are different methods into getting this Piece of Heart. Technically, it's located in Impa's house inside the cow's stall, but to reach it, you have to get up on the ledge with the passage right above the cuckoo lady at daytime.

1st method with Child Link (Hard): Grab a Cuckoo and climb up to where one of the brothers is running on a ledge of an unfinished building. You may need to throw the Cuckoo to ascend each ledge. Once you've climbed upon the pile of bricks, jump to the ledge, but you would need to dodge the brother running across the ledge in order to run to the far side and float to the ledge that leads to the Cow's Stall in Impa's House. This can only be achieved in the daytime, as Cuckoo's will not be apparent until then.

2nd method with Child Link (Easy): After you talk with the Great Fairy on top of Death Mountain, ask the owl to take you back to Kakariko Village. He should drop you on top of Impa's House where you can simply jump to the wooden ledge. This only happens one time, though.

3rd Method with Adult Link (Easy): Acquire the Hookshot and aim it towards the wooden ledge. Then enter and take.

4th Method with adult link(easy): need longshot. get on top of the fence near the windmill door, shoot at the roof, once on the roof collect the heart from the man , then face towards the windmill, find the black square opening and hook onto the wooden post with the longshot and you should end up in the hallway, then walk up grab the chicken, jump out and land on the shooting gallery roof, then jump and fly onto the ledge and get the heart container near the cow

[edit] Kakariko Village #3

Special Items Required: Hookshot

Status Required: Adult Link

In Kakariko Village, climp atop the fence near the windmill. Your target should be the roof of Granny's Potion Shop, and your goal should be to talk directly to the man atop the roof. Once mounted, aim the hookshot towards the lower part of the roof. This may take multiple tries, as it's difficult to pinpoint the red dot approximately. The Longshot may be required if it proves too difficult.

Once up, talk to the guy without using L-Targeting, and he'll be happy to give you a Piece of Heart.

[edit] Kakariko Village #4

Special Items Required: Song of Time (Hookshot not necessary, but helpful)

Status Required: Adult Link

After the race with Dante, the gravekeeper, play the Song of Time to exit. You should find yourself in the windmill at Kakariko Village. At this point, you can simply jump across the rotating platform to acquire the Piece of Heart across the windmill. If you happen to miss this, simply aim the hookshot near the Piece of Heart to acquire it.

[edit] Lake Hylia #1

Special Items Required: Gold Scale

Status Required: Child or Adult Link

At the single house in Lake Hylia, go inside it and go to the laboratory water pool. Using the gold scale, dive down to the complete bottom enough to touch the floor. Afterwards, speak to the old man, he'll tell you he observed your actions, (scary) and will offer you a Piece of Heart.

[edit] Lake Hylia #2

Special Items Required: None (maybe 10 rubees)

Status Required: Child Link

Go to the fishing game at the far left of the lake. Talk to the man, and he'll let you play to win a prize. The idea is to beat the Fisherman's record. The best place to fish would be the stump at the far end of the lake. Cast your rod and try to aim it above the largest fish you can see. Attempt to lure it not too fast to lose his interest, but not too slow as well, and he'll eventually bite it. Remember to immediately set the hook, and reel in the fish. Try to pull the rod to where the fish is swimming to make things easier, as fighting the fish may cause you to lose it.

Keep trying and eventually you'll reel in enough to beat the Fisherman's record, which should be around 10 pounds. Speak to him, and he'll give you the Piece of Heart, the promised prize.

[edit] Lake Hylia #3

Special Items Required: Magic Bean Leaf ingrained as a Child

Status Required: Adult Link

Near the old man's laboratory, purchase a Magic Bean Leaf and plant the seed as a child. When an adult, climp atop the fully formed plant and you should ascend to the roof. Climb to the chimmney via the ladder and a Piece of Heart shall be perched. Watch out for the Buoy if it's night, however.

[edit] Lon Lon Ranch

Special Items Required: None

Status Required: Child Link

Enter Lon Lon Ranch and go to the open space area. Go all the way to the far end of Lon Lon Ranch, and you should spot a shed. Enter the area, and there will be a whole lot of boxes. To the left of that area towards the wall, it's hiding a tunnel. Push them all back to clear the way towards the tunnel, then crawl in there as a child. It should lead to a room with a Piece of Heart in a pile of hay.

[edit] Lost Woods #1

Special Items Required: Ocarina, Saria's Song

Status Required: Child Link

After you enter the area, go to the left and you should see a stump in the room to the left. Stand atop the small stump and a Skull Kid should appear. Get out the Ocarina and play Saria's Song once you've acquired it, and he'll be grateful to give you a Piece of Heart.

Note: In case you scare the Skull Kid away by getting close to it, leave the room, reenter, and he'll appear to you again

[edit] Lost Woods #2

Special Items Required: Ocarina

Status Required: Child Link

When you enter the Lost Woods, go to the right and climb down the ladder. Afterwards, you should see a stump with two trunks. Stand atop the trunk next to it, and two Skull Kids should appear. Bring out your Ocarina and they'll ask you to participate in a game. The object of the game is mainly memorization; you'll need to play what notes they'll grant you and play them without error.

Writing it down on a piece of paper may help you. Win this three times to get a Piece of Heart.

[edit] Zora's Domain

Items Required: Deku Stick

Status Required: Child Link

Go to the King's throne and use the Deku stick to light the torch down below by one of the torches on his floor. Doing this will create a more efficient way of lighting the torches, which you must do at once at there will be four at a time. Run down to the botton and light the torch near the shop and one near the minature underground lake implanted at the rocks submerged in some water. Be careful not to "swim."

Using the shallow water, go behind the waterfall to light two torches. After that is completed, a Piece of Heart should appear in that niche contained in a Treasure Chest. If nothing happens, that must mean a torch has gone out, as each stays on fire for a limited amount of time. Keep practicing or get it on your first try, and the trinket shall be yours.

[edit] Zora's Fountain #1

Special Items Required: None

Status Required: Adult Link

At the ledge where Jabu-Jabu was, jump on the icebergs. Go through the obstacles by the small icebergs and keep going one direction. When you're at the fork to the Ice Cavern and at the end of the lake, choose the path away from the Ice Cavern, and you should eventually jump on a lone ice platform that supports a Piece of Heart. Jump and grab it.

[edit] Zora's Fountain #2

Special Items Required: Iron Boots, (Zora Tunic helpful)

Status Required: Adult Link

Use the Iron boots and descend to the bottom of the lake. Be careful, as this task is time-consuming and you may run out of time if your health isn't full or a lack of amount of hearts is apparent, in which you may want to resort to the Zora tunic. Try to spot a path of gems and try to make out where they're headed. At the absolute bottom rests a Piece of Heart. Sink, take it, and get out of there.

[edit] Zora's River #1

Special Items Required: Zelda's Lullaby, Epona's Song, Saria's Song, Sun's Song, Song of Time, Song of Storms.

Status Required: Child Link

In a section of the river, you should see a stump with some curious figures beneath the water. Go on the stump, and play a song. The acceptable songs are Zelda's Lullaby, Epona's Song, Saria's Song, Sun's Song, Song of Time, and Song of Storms. After they're all played, they'll supposedly grow big, and ask you to play a game. The object of this game is to press certain buttons on the controller when a fly is above a frog to trigger that frog to jump up and eat the fly. After that, another one will appear and you must move at a relatively fast pace.

The controls are:

Green Frog: A button
Blue Frog: Left C button
Yellow Frog: Down C button
White Frog: Up C button
Pink Frog: Right C button

Keep in mind the song remains the same (a.k.a. the order of the flies). If you consider the game to be too challenging, the song itself is: "A button-Left C button-Right C button-Down C button-Left C button-Right C button-Down C button-A button-Down C button-A button-Down C button-Right C button-Left C button-A button.

In shorthand, it's A-Left-Right-Down-Left-Right-Down-A-Down-A-Down-Right-Left-A.

[edit] Zora's River #2

Special Items Required: None

Status Required: Child or Adult Link

In the area where the frogs are, you should see a lofty platform with a heart piece atop of it. If you can, climb up the ledge to jump to the Piece of Heart. If you have difficulty doing this as you may not always grab the ledges, grab the chicken at the beginning of the level and toss it up the ledge, then use it to fly to the platform. Get your Piece of Heart either way.

[edit] Zora's River #3

Special Items Required: Chicken (By carrying it.)

Status Required: Child Link

Near the entrance to Zora's Domain, there should be a ledge supporting a Piece of Heart. To get this, you'll need to grab the chicken at the start of the level, and then jumping across whatever height necessary to float down to the platform. Simply grab and be on your way.

[edit] Zora's River #4

Special Items Required: Song of Storms

Status Required: Child Link

Go to the stump to where the frogs are located at the middle of the river, and while atop of the stump, bring out your ocarina. After the frogs are out, play the Song of Storms. This will have a pretty salutary affect on the Frog's gratitude (apparentally), and they'll be thankful enough to give you a Piece of Heart after playing that certain song.
