Hylian Shield

The Hylian shield is an item that has appeared in a couple of titles to-date. Often a combination of wood and metal, the Hylian Shield is highly decorated featuring Royal Family of Hyrule crest and the legendary Triforce. It is considered to be the ultimate shield in the games it features in, providing the best defence and being immune to elements such as fire.

[edit] The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

In Ocarina of Time, the Hylian Shield is first acquired while Link is a child although he can barely use it at the time. As a child, all he can do is crouch and hope for attacks to bounce off the shield on his back. This is an effective way of scaling Death Mountain to reach the summit. Once he becomes an adult, however, Link will gain full use of the shield.

Like the Deku Shield, the Hylian Shield can be acquired in a couple of ways. The best way originally is to find one hidden in Kakariko Graveyard in one of the graves specially marked out by flowers in the pattern of the Triforce. It can also be bought from the Bazaar, which can be purchased with a discount if Link first talks to the Hyrulean Soldier guarding Kakariko Village. The final way is to find it in Treasure Chests in some dungeons like the Deku Shield.

[edit] The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

The Hylian Shield is acquired in Twilight Princess by purchasing it from either a Goron merchant or Malo of Malo Mart, with both being situated in Hyrule Castle Town. The design is somewhat changed from Ocarina of Time, with the most notable change being the removal of the yellow triangle from the bottom of the shield.

It becomes available to Link before entering the Goron Mines, making it an invaluable item for Link given that it will not burn like the Wooden Shield or Ordon Shield. As well as this elemental resistance, it can also now deflect magic attacks via use of the Shield Attack.

[edit] The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Quite different to the rest of the shields in Skyward Sword, the Hylian Shield cannot be bought or upgraded to. It is acquired from Lanayru after eight consecutive wins against previously fought bosses in what's known as the Lightning Round. The design deviates little from that in Twilight Princess, but the main design looks more alike to a Loftwing.

It is also the strongest of all the shields. Despite having a hit points meter, it will never decrease from taking damage like other shields, making it impossible to break and able to deflect an infinite number of attacks.
