The Crimson Loftwing is Link's Loftwing in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and serves as Link's guide through the air. The Crimson Loftwing can be used to soar the skies around Skyloft or descend to The Surface, otherwise known as Hylia.
 Skyword Sword
In Skyword Sword, the Crimson Loftwing is known to be an otherwise extinct species, as said by Gaepora, the Knight Academy headmaster. When Link went to receive his Loftwing, the Crimson Loftwing descended and the two formed a bond "unlike any I've seen," Gaepora says. Link's Crimson Loftwing may be a part of the reason why Groose and his friends dislike Link, as well as Link's high favor in Zelda and her father's eyes.
During the beginning of the game the Wing Ceremony, a race to see who will become the next Senior at the Knight Academy, takes place. When Zelda suggests you go find your Loftwing, it doesn't come, an error in the ways of Loftwing. Knowing that something is out of place, Link is forced to search for his loftwing. It is soon learned when over hearing Groose and his friends talk that he hid it in his secret hide-out behind the waterfall. Once acquiring a practice sword, Link will be able to free his Crimson Loftwing and begin the race.
Unlike the other Loftwings, the Crimson Loftwing has a crimson red color and instant bond with his/her master.
