Here is a list of the main characters in Phantom Hourglass, as well as a bit about them and what their roles are in the game. Beware of spoilers.

Our protagonist, Link, is a young boy originally from Outset Island, his homeland where he used to live peacefully with his grandmother and sister Aryll. He is the legendary "Hero of Time", and has saved the Kingdom of Hyrule as well as his sister and Princess Zelda from the evil mastermind, Ganondorf. He specialises in many weapons, specifically the sword, and has a tremendous amount of courage and strength.

In Phantom Hourglass, Link must summon his courage once again and set out on a new journey across the seas with the help of his fairy allies to save his young pirate friend Tetra (also Princess Zelda) from the Ghost Ship.

Ciela

Ciela is a bright, optimistic fairy that awakens Link when he washes ashore Mercay Island after the Ghost Ship incident. She can't seem to remember anything about her past and is the granddaughter of the mysterious old man Oshus. She accompanies Link on his journey across the sea, and proves to be more important than she ever imagined.

Linebeck

Linebeck, a great sailor of the seas, allows Link to use his boat and travel with him to different islands in search of the Ghost Ship. However, he is only helping Link for his own greedy reasons (treasure and wishes), and usually hides behind Link when danger arrives, making up excuses as he goes along.

Oshus

Oshus is the old man who lives on Mercay Island and who is said to be Ciela's grandfather. He gives Link his first sword and trains him in battle. After enough training, he allows Ciela to accompany Link on his journey to save Tetra, and pops up every once in a while to give Link some valuable information. Towards the end of the game, he reveals his true identity which is quite the opposite from the quiet old man who lives peacefully on a small island.

Tetra

Tetra is a brave young pirate in charge of a whole crew who backs down from nothing. She can be a bit rude at times, but deep down, is a good person. Her and Link are pretty close, and she is also Princess Zelda. When she blindly jumps onto the Ghost Ship, she disappears, and Link sets out on a journey to save her.
