BOSS BATTLES

A comprehensive look at the bosses of Phantom Hourglass, as well as key strategies to defeating them.

Ordered By:
1st Boss Battle - The Temple of Fire

Blaaz, Master of Fire

The battle will initiate after Blaaz makes his grand entrance as your first boss by exploding into the middle of the room and splitting into three smaller poe-like creatures. Begin by equipping and taking out your boomerang. Before you use it however, look at the top screen and take note of the display of the number of horns each of the three poes has. Target the poe with one horn, then the one with two horns, and then the one with three horns to hit and fuse them back together as Blaaz. If you do not hit them in the order mentioned above, they will simply hit one another and then separate again without fusing. When Blaaz is in his larger form, run over to where he is and slash him as quick and as many times as possible with your sword. If he becomes un-stunned in his large form, hit him with your boomerang and start slashing again. Repeat this process and he will eventually be defeated. Take note that rocks sometimes fall from the ceiling, so try to avoid them, and also that there are pots around the room you can break open to restore some health. Your prize for defeating Blaaz is a Heart Container.

2nd Boss Battle - The Temple of Wind

Cyclok, Stirrer of Winds

Unlike your previous boss Blaaz, Cyclok requires some good timing to defeat. Once you step into the "arena", three cyclones will appear, and you will see Cyclok floating in the air high above your head. In order to get him to your level so you can damage him with your sword, you must throw a bomb up the cyclone he is floating above so it will hit him and knock him down. You can see his position by looking at the ground for his shadow, or simply by looking at the upper screen. If you do manage to hit him with a bomb, run over to where he lies stunned on the ground, and slash him with your sword as much as you can. Repeat this process to defeat him for a heart container, and be patient, as this battle can be quite frustrating. Also look out for the cyclones he sometimes summons. To avoid these, simply move out of their way. A few quick tips are to break open the pots around the area for health when you need it, and, if you're short on bombs or if you run out, you can use the ones scattered around you. If you'd prefer accuracy though, using your own bombs is recommended due to the fact you can run around with them unlit.

3rd Boss Battle - The Temple of Courage

Crayk, Bane of Courage

Crayk has one big eye, and that's your target. Where do you start? If you haven't noticed, Crayk is invisible, and the only way to even guess where he is is by looking at the top screen, which displays the area from his perspective. As Link, pick a place to stand and take out your bow. Slide the stylus across from Link so that he's in his shooting position, and stay there. Switch your view to the top screen. Watch where the boss moves, and wait until he starts dashing towards Link. Line Link's arrow up in the middle of the wind from the monster coming towards you, and let her rip. If you hit the eye, Crayk will become visible again, and you should see purple gem-like spots all around his body. Target them with your bow and repeat the "hit the eye process" until all of the gems are gone. When that happens, his shell will fall off, revealing his naked skin and a blue tail. While dodging the minor enemies, run after Crayk and slash his tail when within reach. If you hit it enough, he will fall, promoting you to victory and leaving behind a Heart Container. Unlike your last two boss battles, this stage has no pots around it to replenish health or arrows. If you want to do this, simply kill the smaller creatures around you in the arena.

4th Boss Battle - The Ghost Ship

Diabolical Cubus Sisters

After helping assemble the "Cubus Sisters", what you thought to be four friendly little girls lost on the ghost ship, actually turned out to be your worst nightmare! After being teleported to a different part of the ship and seeing the "girls" take their true forms as ghosts, this rather easy boss battle will commence.

The four ghosts will be hovering above you on the top screen, three of them attempting to zap you with what appears to be an energy or laser beam of some sort, while one fires an energy ball at you. Avoid the beams by standing in a safe location, and focus on the energy ball. When it comes towards you, do not dodge it, instead, deflect it back at the ghost by swinging your sword at the opportune moment (the spin attack is recommended and most powerful). It may come back more than once, but eventually the ghost will get confused and won't hit it back, meaning it will hit him. If you repeat this process every time you have an energy ball shot at you, the ghosts will disappear one by one, until they are eventually gone. When that happens, it is safe to say you have won the fight. For your efforts, you will receive the Ghost Key and a Heart Container.

5th Boss Battle - Goron Temple

Dongorongo, Armored Lizard

Dongorongo is a big, red, dinosaur-like beast that appears as your 5th boss. Right after he appears in the room before that of the pure metal, your little helper Gongoron appears through a passage in the wall, and just in the nick of time! You'll need his help to beat this one!

This fight is composed of two sections, the first being where Link is trapped on one side of the room due to quick sand, and Gongoron is on the other side with the monster. You begin by controlling Gongoron, and if you need to switch back to Link, you can do so by tapping the icon on the bottom screen. Keep watch over the Link icon by the way, because every once in a while snakes will make their way over to Link and attack him. When the icon flashes "Danger!" switch to Link and eliminate the cause of peril. Anyway, as Gongoron, roll up into a ball and circle the beast until you've out-tumbled him and his side becomes vulnerable. Tap his side multiple times when it's open to attack, and keep doing this until he falls. When he does, take control of Link and send over a Bombchu right into Dongorongo's mouth. When it explodes, Dongorongo will urch, and this will give you time to collect hearts from the pots around the room if needed (Gongoron and Link share the same health). After you do this a couple of times, Dongorongo will fall, and won't get up. Gongoron will run into the next room to wait for you when you go to get the pure metal. You run across the now-formed bridge... just to figure out that Dongorongo was playing dead! The bridge disappears, the door shuts tight behind Gongoron, and the beast awakens. You're trapped!

This is the second section of the battle. This time you must defeat Dongorongo for good, and you don't have Gongoron's help. Beware of the snakes in the room, and take advantage of the pots on the edges of the room which contain hearts. For his first move, Dongorongo inhales a whole bunch of air to later spew flames from his mouth. To prevent this and damage him, simply throw a bomb (it can be one of yours or one from the bomb plants around the room) into his mouth, and watch it explode inside of him. He'll fall over, revealing the big blue spot on his back. Run over to it and slash it as much as you can with your sword. If you do it well enough, this process only needs to be done twice. When he finally falls for good and deteriorates, the ferocious Dongorongo is finally dead. You will be rewarded with a Heart Container and access to the room holding the Crimsonine, your first pure metal.

6th Boss Battle - The Temple of Ice

Gleeok, Two-Headed Dragon

After progressing to the edge of an icy platform, two large objects cause a stir in the water surrounding Link. They just happen to be the necks and heads of the Two-Headed Dragon Gleeok!

When the two heads appear from underneath the water, you'll see they have masks on. Your first mission is to eliminate them. Notice the color of each head? One is red for fire, and one is blue for ice. It just so happens that the two heads are each other's weakness. Equip your Grappling Hook, and wait for the first attack. The red head goes first by spitting a flame ball at you. It's your job to make a diagonal rope line with the grappling hook to deflect it back at the blue head. Here's a diagram example:

RED ------ BLUE

• -------- •
---\
----\
-----\
------\
-------\
--------\
• -------- •

By making a rope line like that before the flame ball hits you, it will deflect the red head's attack back at the blue head and crack the mask. Take note that attacks deflected back at the head they originally came from will not have any effect. As with the attacks from the red head, in order to correctly deflect attacks from the blue head, you must make a rope line like this:

RED ------ BLUE

• -------- •
--------/
-------/
------/
-----/
----/
---/
• -------- •

Keep deflecting the balls of fire and ice back at the correct heads to crack and then shatter the masks. Be sure to keep a look out for bite attacks as well. That is when one of the two heads comes down to your level and tries to bite you. To avoid this attack, simply move back towards the door. They can't reach you there. They also have another method of attempting to hurt you. This is when both heads plunge back into the water, and cause a great wave to crash you down... unless you're standing on a peg. Be sure to stand on one when this happens, and when the ice chunks come flying at you, smash them with your sword with good timing. Some chunks have hearts in them.

After you crack both masks, the dragon becomes furious and destroys two of your pegs, leaving only the two closest to the door behind you. One dragon will lower itself and try to bite you, and then charge up for an energy attack. While they are charging, their tongue is vulnerable, so target it with your Grappling Hook, and then from there, continue to target it to a peg. If you let go, the dragon's head will be slammed against a peg, hurting it, and sending the next dragon over. Repeat the process of slamming heads and dodging attacks to defeat this two-headed beast, and receive a Heart Container and access to the room holding the second pure metal, Azurine.

7th Boss Battle - Mutoh's Temple

Eox, Ancient Stone Soldier

Before entering the room beyond the slot for the boss key, be sure to equip your hammer. When you're in there, it's smart to waste no time. When you proceed to the room, you will see in the middle of the room a pile of large stones. When you approach them, they will take the shape of your next boss, Eox. Although Eox looks intimidating, if you take the correct precautions and know what you're doing, you should be able to defeat him easily. Take note of the multiple springboards around you, and the red areas on his body.

Your first goal is to break Eox's body up by destroying the red areas over his body, thus removing the stone parts of his structure. Begin by circling Eox, running quickly. He will try smash you with his massive hands. Be sure to do your best to evade him, but don't get too close to the edge of the room because you will fall off due to their being no sides. When you get to a springboard, tap it to be sent flying into the air. Using your hammer, when in range of Eox, begin to hack away at parts of his body by tapping and/or sliding the stylus over the red areas. The middle of the body is the easiest to get at, and a good strategy to get at his backside is to take the shortcut by running under his legs. Also watch out for the spikes he shoots out of his head. To avoid them, simply run in the direction they're going in and they will subside eventually. Repeat the process of using the springboards to get in range and then using your hammer to hack at the red spots until they turn blue and Eox falls apart and collapses. When that happens, use a springboard to be launched onto the top of his head and attack the blue gem there. Watch out for even more spikes that shoot from his head (this time, more often), and repeat this entire process until he deteriorates. When he does, more sand will be added to your hourglass, you'll see a chest appear that holds a Heart Container, and a cage will rise, revealing a hole. Go down the hole after collecting your rewards to talk to Mutoh, who gives you the last pure metal, Aquanine.
